First Sunday?

What you can expect during your first visit

Attending church for the first time often comes with butterflies, anxieties, and fears over the unexpected. Consider yourself normal! I (Pastor Craig) even feel like that when I walk into a church for the first time. It feels like a blind date…hoping for the best…but preparing for the worst! Let me settle your fears: New Hope is a church where people are warmly welcomed and quickly feel at home. Please consider “committing to 6 Sundays” in a row to get a clear picture of what New Hope is like.

In terms of ‘dress’, New Hope is a “come as you are” church. Some men wear blue jeans – others wear dress shirts – a few wear ties. Some ladies wear slacks – others wear dresses. In the summer, shorts are preferred by some. Seriously, from your pastor, wear what is most comfortable. As a pastor who is responsible to deliver the Word, I prefer to wear a coat and tie, but this is certainly a “cut above” what most people wear. Dress comfortably.

New Hope is truly a church of all ages. We have several hundred children from birth through 5th grade – we call this “The Kidzone.” We also have teens (6th-12th grade) who participate in our regular worship service. And we have adults all the up through their 90’s. There are lots of couples; lots of singles; middle-age; upper-age. You will not feel “out of place”…unless you are 125 years old. Even then, please come:)

Depends. If you have no children and are easily ‘mobile’, then arrive by about 9:45 to be in the auditorium by 9:50. We start worship at 10:00am sharp! I like to show up 10 minutes early to get acclimated to the surroundings. If you have children or need additional time to get around, I would recommend about 9:30, which will provide enough time to get settled.

The word in Christian circles is: contemporary. New Hope worship offers a wonderful variety of acoustical, orchestra, big band, guitars, drums, vocal ensembles, choirs, and yes, for those who grew up like me, we also incorporate hymns! We worship the One True God, encouraging your participation. On a typical Sunday, we worship through singing for about 25 minutes. Want an example? Check out some of our worship HERE!

We preach from one book – the Bible. At New Hope, we preach “expositionally”, which means book by book, chapter by chapter. In the last several years, we have preached through Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Jonah, John, Romans, 1 & 2 Thessalonians. The sermons are roughly 40 minutes long…but don’t time me because I sometimes go long:) I have two goals in preaching. One, theological truth – what does God’s word say. Two, relevant application – what does it mean to me. My prayer is that there are always action steps to take home and implement into your life. Want an example? Check out past messages HERE!

No. Years ago, when I visited a church, they asked all the “first-time visitors” to stand so everyone could see them. No way in the world was I going to stand up! I didn’t know what they were going to do to me! On a typical Sunday, we will verbally welcome all of our guests who are visiting for the first time. We want you to feel welcome at New Hope – but we don’t want you to feel embarrassed or singled out.

Sunday worship services in Africa can last 3-5 hours…and they are just getting warmed up. At New Hope, we haven’t quite reached that level of perseverance! A typical worship service at New Hope lasts about 75-85 minutes. We are not “mastered” by the clock, but we also understand the culture in which we live.

We have an AWESOME Kidzone ministry. When you arrive, ask one of our greeters where the “Kids check-in station” is. They will direct you to a room where volunteers can help check your children in. Our nursery (0-2) is well staffed as well as our younger classes (3-5). And our Kidzone gymnasium (6-12 years old) is a vibrant, eye-catching, room of activity. Of course, if you feel more comfortable, parents are welcome to keep their kids with them during the worship service.

We have made every effort to ensure the safety of our children and adults. Childcare workers have approved background checks run through law enforcement agencies. We also have a team of security on site to do our very best to protect our premises. New Hope has been on the “cutting edge” of safety and security. We value the lives of every person who walks in our doors.

After the service, find the area in the lobby called “Connections Corner” where you can meet a pastor and ask questions about the church.

Although we don’t provide a lunch, we do provide coffee and donuts immediately following the service. This is a great time to “hang around” and meet other people who call New Hope ‘home.’

We look forward to seeing you this Sunday Morning at 10:00am!
