Insecurity, simply put, is dreading dangers that may come.
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.” Luke 12:4
Are the dangers real? They may be, but It is an unhealthy preoccupation with that danger; with, “what’s going to happen next?” So much so that the mind, body, soul, can become wrapped up in it. In the case of Luke 12:4 the core issue is a deep insecurity that those with political power pose a present danger to our future pleasure.
It can look like dread for the direction of the culture, the damage of the country, the delusions of media, the danger of cities, or the depravity of politicians. The more we bury our heads into this “breaking news,” the less we will lift our voices in joyful praise. So what do we do about these insecurities?
The key phrasie is, “and then have nothing more that they can do to you.” It’s kind of funny, Jesus basicall says, “what’s the worst that can happen, they kill you? Don’t fear those, all they can do is kill you.” But look at the next verse, He points us toward the One we should actually fear:
“But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!” Luke 12:5
The proverbs tell us that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. It is fear, reverence, awe! It is God who has the authority, and not just the authority over life but the authority over death as well; over heaven, and over hell. Then, immediately after this verse Jesus says,
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7
So what is the connection between the One who has authority over hell and the One who watches over the sparrows? Our reverence does not just come by thinking of the authority He has but also the affection He holds! He cares for and sees for us all the way down the number of hairs we have lost on our pillow this morning. He has great authority and also great sensitivity. He has both Pwer and pity, muscle and mercy, clout and compassion.
The antidote to insecurity is that my Heavenly Father watches over me closely. You realign your heart to the respective reverence for who God is, you remember that He is the one with the authority. Authority not just over this life but over the next, not just over the present earth but also heaven and hell – eternity. He judges both the living and the dead. He sees us completley yet He cares for us deeply, all the way down to those little insignificant marketplace purchases. The secret to having no fear before the Lord is that we have a proper fear of Him. Take action and embrace the comfort of God – we know that He has the authority, He will have the victory, and He cares deeply for us. It is why He sent His Son, Jesus.
